Las Vegas: Where Satan Walked

Las Vegas: Where Satan Walked

And the Lord said unto Satan, “From whence comest thou?”

And Satan answered the Lord, and said, “From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”

–Job 2:2

Abandoned cowboy boots litter the pavement.

A cowboy hat lies discarded.

Plastic cups…

beer cans…

random trash…

lie trampled into the grass

where thousands of human feet fled Death from on high,

and where Satan walked.

As blood hit the ground, he smiled. It was a reimagining of some of his earliest work. Cain and Abel. Man against fellow man. Only this time with high-powered rifles and indiscriminate kill shots. None of that primitive bashing-your-brother’s-head-with-a-stone business.

As terror filled hearts, Satan smiled. Of course, they wouldn’t call the killer a “terrorist.” But it didn’t matter. Let humans have their petty squabbles over The Meanings of Words. Let them use words as weapons to silence and shame.

Satan’s man had guns.

“Legal” guns.

Guns that spoke in rapid-fire volume.

Guns that, with every pop-pop-pop, said that perfect love — the only thing that drives away terror — had long been gone from the earth.
